A common theme in historical Budgets, is the Treasury’s drive to combat varying types of fraud and tax evasion. A further measure has been introduced to help to repair the tax purse. This is demonstrated by new steps to apparently raise £2.2 billion between now and 2025/26.
The government will invest over £100 million in a Taxpayer Protection Taskforce of 1,265 HMRC staff, to combat fraud within COVID-19 support packages, including the CJRS and SEISS, representing one of the largest responses to a fraud risk by HMRC. This will include raising awareness of enforcement action in order to deter fraud, and will significantly strengthen law enforcement for Bounce Back Loans.
Furthermore additional investment will be applied to improve DWP’s capacity and capability to tackle fraud.
