You are hereHome / Self-Employment Income Support Scheme: Get ready to make a claim

11 May 2020

To most self-employed individuals the announcement of the Self Employment Income Support Scheme (or SEISS), will have come as welcome news.

The initial communications said that there would be nothing for individuals to do, however HMRC communications issued last week indicate that this might not be the case.

Firstly, you are now able to ‘check your eligibility’ and after this you can login, pass the ID questions and register your contact details. At the moment, we are not fully aware whether these steps are essential for claiming, however we strongly advise taking the appropriate steps just in case.

Please note, that you will need the following information before you commence:

  1. Your national insurance number;
  2. Your unique tax reference number (10 digits long);
  3. Your Government ID and password; and
  4. A form of verifying your identification, being either:
    • Your photo driving license; or
    • Your passport; or
    • Details of your recent financial history.

Once you have been through this process, you will be advised of the time and date that you will be able to log back into your HMRC account in order to approve and claim the payment that HMRC has calculated for you based upon your past Tax Returns.

For those of you that have not previously registered online with HMRC, you will not have all the relevant details noted above and therefore, you should register yourself using the following link:

As your agents, we are unable to help you with this process, however we can help you register for HMRC online. Please download an easy to follow step by step guide to get you through the initial stages to claim under the SEISS.
